The secondary, non-formal or "backstairs" architecture of the Hermitage buildings on St. Petersburg`s Palace Embankment occupies the largest portion of its invisible parts. Its current state dates from the twentieth century. The proposed theme of this album covers an enormous territory; there can be no doubt that the conceptual and philosophical form the project takes is an innovation. The collaboration of the architect and the artist, who has worked with the museum for a number of years, made it possible to see and show the "infra-architectural" countenance of the Hermitage. The view of informal space and multiple layers of events that the album affords embodies the richness of life itself. The album creates another possibility for perceiving the world that is invisible to the public at large. This idea is brought to expression in the installations, and represents an expansion of the exhibition space within the context of the development of one of the great museums of Russia and the world.
